Windows updates and the Windows 11 upgrade: what should I do?

IT sends Windows security updates and upgrades computers to Windows 11. Restarting when prompted keeps your computer secure and working.

When you see an update or restart notice

1. Save your work and close your programs.
2. Select Start > Power > Update and restart.
3. Keep the laptop plugged in and don't turn it off while it says Working on updates. Some updates take 30 minutes or more.

Windows 11 upgrade

• IT schedules Windows 11 upgrades. If your computer shows a Windows 11 prompt, it's safe to follow it when you have time to leave the computer plugged in.
• Before an upgrade, make sure important files are saved to OneDrive or a shared drive, not only on your desktop.
• If your computer still runs Windows 10 and hasn't been scheduled, submit a ticket. Some older computers need to be replaced instead of upgraded.

Updates keep failing, or it's stuck

If an update stays on the same percentage for more than an hour, or keeps failing, contact the Help Desk. Your computer may be low on disk space.

Tip: restart at least once a week so updates install on their own.
