I'm getting pop-ups, notifications, or a warning that my computer is infected

Most pop-ups come from websites you allowed to send notifications. A pop-up that says your computer is infected and tells you to call a number is a scam.

A pop-up says your computer is infected or locked, or tells you to call Microsoft

1. Don't call the number, click anything, or enter your password. Microsoft and IT never ask you to call from a pop-up.
2. Close the browser. If it won't close, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the browser, and select End task.
3. Call the Help Desk at (704) 283-3834 x5000 and tell them what you saw.
4. If you already called the number or let someone connect to your computer, disconnect from the network right away (turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the cable), and call the Help Desk.

Stop website notifications (Microsoft Edge)

1. Select … > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Notifications.
2. Under Allow, select … next to any site you don't recognize and select Remove.

Stop website notifications (Google Chrome)

1. Select ⋮ > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
2. Remove any site you don't recognize from the Allowed list.

Windows or app notifications

Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications to turn notifications off for specific apps. Don't turn off notifications from CrowdStrike, Software Center, or Windows Update.
