Overview
If your scanned documents have vertical lines or streaks, the scanner glass may be dirty. Dust, toner, correction fluid, or small debris on the glass can cause lines to appear on scanned documents.
Cleaning the scanner glass usually resolves this issue.
Signs the Scanner Glass Needs Cleaning
You may need to clean the scanner glass if:
Scanned documents show straight vertical lines
The lines appear in the same location on every scan
Copies made through the document feeder show lines
How to Clean the Scanner Glass
Step 1
Open the scanner lid on the printer.
Step 2
Locate the two scanning glass areas:
The large glass surface used when placing documents directly on the scanner.
The thin strip of glass next to it used by the automatic document feeder (ADF).
The thin strip is the most common cause of scan lines.
Step 3
Use a soft lint-free cloth (such as a microfiber cloth).
Step 4
Lightly clean the glass with:
Glass cleaner sprayed on the cloth (not directly on the glass), or
A slightly damp cloth with water.
Step 5
Wipe the glass until it is clean and dry.
Step 6
Close the scanner lid.
Step 7
Test by scanning a document again.
Important Tips
✔ Always spray cleaner on the cloth, not directly on the printer.
✔ Avoid using paper towels, which can scratch the glass.
✔ Clean the small ADF strip carefully — this is the most common cause of scan lines.
