Overview
Your computer name is a unique identifier used by IT to locate your device on the network. The helpdesk may ask for your computer name when troubleshooting issues or providing remote support.
Your computer should have two labels located on it.
A barcode with a number such as UC-3440
A white label with your pc name like IT-CJ99RN3
If you do not have these labels you can use the below methods to find your pc name.
Method 1: Using Windows Settings (Easiest)
Step 1
Click the Start Menu.
Step 2
Click Settings.
Step 3
Click System.
Step 4
Scroll down and click About.
Step 5
Look for Device Name.
This is your computer name.
Example:
UC-PC-12345
Method 2: Using the Desktop Shortcut
Step 1
Right-click This PC on the desktop.
Step 2
Click Properties.
Step 3
Locate Device Name under Device Specifications.
Method 3: Using Command Prompt
Step 1
Click the Start Menu.
Step 2
Type:
cmd
Step 3
Press Enter.
Step 4
Type the following command and press Enter:
hostname
The computer name will appear on the next line.
Why IT May Ask for Your Computer Name
The IT Helpdesk may request your computer name to:
Connect remotely to your computer
Identify your device on the network
Troubleshoot software or login issues
Locate your device in system management tools
