Overview
You can import saved passwords and bookmarks into Google Chrome when moving to a new computer or switching from another browser.
Passwords are imported from a CSV file
Bookmarks are imported from an HTML file
These files are usually created by exporting data from another browser.
Import Passwords into Chrome
⚠️ Important: Password import files contain plain text passwords. Handle these files carefully.
Step 1
Open Google Chrome.
Step 2
Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.
Step 3
Click Settings.
Step 4
Select Autofill and Passwords.
Step 5
Click Google Password Manager.
Step 6
Click the Settings (gear icon).
Step 7
Click Import Passwords.
Step 8
Select your CSV password file.
Example file name:
Chrome Passwords.csv
Step 9
Click Open to complete the import.
Import Bookmarks into Chrome
Step 1
Open Google Chrome.
Step 2
Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.
Step 3
Select:
Bookmarks → Bookmark Manager
Step 4
In the Bookmark Manager window, click the three dots (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
Step 5
Click Import Bookmarks.
Step 6
Select the HTML bookmarks file.
Example file name:
bookmarks.html
Step 7
Click Open.
Your bookmarks will now appear in the Bookmarks Bar or a new Imported folder.
Importing from Another Browser Automatically
Chrome can also import data directly from other browsers such as:
Microsoft Edge
Mozilla Firefox
Safari
Steps
Open Chrome
Click ⋮ (three dots)
Select Bookmarks and Lists
Click Import Bookmarks and Settings
Choose the browser to import from
Select the data you want to import
Troubleshooting
Import Password Option Missing
Some organizations disable password imports using browser security policies.
Bookmarks Did Not Appear
Check for a folder called Imported inside the Bookmark Manager.
CSV File Not Recognized
Make sure the password file is saved as a .CSV file and not Excel format (.xlsx).
Security Reminder
After importing passwords:
✔ Delete the CSV file
✔ Do not store password files long term
✔ Avoid sending password files through email
